Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology at Brown
The Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology at Brown University shares a common interest in how organisms function, how they interact with their environments and how the mechanisms that sustain these processes have evolved over time.
Our work is directed toward understanding biological systems at the gene, individual, population, community and ecosystem levels of organization. Major conceptual areas pursued by our department include animal locomotion and functional morphology, ecology of marine and terrestrial communities, conservation biology and environmental science, and population and evolutionary genomics. We study a wide variety of organisms - both living and extinct - spanning the tree of life, including microbes, plants and algae, marine invertebrates, terrestrial arthropods, reptiles, birds, and mammals, including humans.

The Division of Biology and Medicine is composed of 14 clinical departments, situated throughout Brown's seven teaching hospital partners, as well as four basic science departments and two hybrid departments on the Brown University campus.

The Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology (EEOB) contributes to a variety of biology concentrations, which are administered by the Office of Biology Undergraduate Education. Students who pursue a Sc.B. in Biology can select the EEOB track in Ecology, Evolution and Organismal Biology, but all biology concentrators have access to courses taught by EEOB faculty. Other popular biology concentrations include the A.B degree in biology, as well as Health and Human Biology, Computational Biology and Applied-Math Biology. The Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology (EEOB) contributes to a variety of other concentrations at Brown. EEOB courses are integral to the track within Environmental Science in Conservation Science, which requires five EEOB courses. Likewise, the Earth, Climate and Biology concentration requires three EEOB courses. Indeed, many other concentrations at Brown require or allow for individual EEOB courses to meet concentration requirements.

The Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology (EEOB) offers a number of courses that students often select, not to meet at degree requirement, but instead out of general interest in broadening their knowledge of topics in ecology, evolution, organismal biology and environmental issues. These include integrative, introductory courses like “Diversity of Life”, which is one of the most popular non-required courses on campus. It also includes more topical courses, such as those in ecology, conservation biology, sensory biology and the Rhode Island Flora.
