Diversity

All individuals, regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, age, or ability are welcome and belong here.

Our academic work is grounded in the knowledge that the best science requires an inclusive environment, and that long-standing biases exist in STEM that negatively impact members of our community and science as a whole. Thus, we strive to be a community in which a diverse set of thoughts, perspectives, and experiences are valued. All individuals, regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, age, or ability are welcome and belong here.

Mission Statement

The Department of Ecology, Evolution & Organismal Biology (EEOB) at Brown is committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of our teaching, mentoring, research, and departmental activities. EEOB is a diverse community of scholars, educators, and students united in our commitment to an inclusive environment and a vibrant future that enables all facets of our society to contribute to a scientific enterprise that broadens understanding of the natural world.

As a community, we are committed to the following:

  1. Educating ourselves, learning about and from each other, and openly discussing biases, barriers, and inequities that some of us face, while also working together across career stages to eliminate these barriers.

  2. Soliciting and receiving feedback so that all members of our community are heard and have a say in our community’s focus and direction, as well as acknowledging and learning from our mistakes, and continually striving to improve.

  3. Combating prejudice and discriminatory practices to provide a safe and inclusive environment and encouraging collaborative partnerships within and between communities so that all are equal and valued.

We bring these commitments to our research laboratories, our classrooms, our meetings, and our social events. We are dedicated to advocating for and bringing about institutional change, and serving as a role model for the rest of the university and for other departments of ecology, evolution, and organismal biology around the world.

To learn more about how we put this philosophy into practice, this page describes the details of the Departmental Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) Committee’s membership, goals, and activities.
